[RF] Special Edition NL!
Welcome to a special edition of Redemption's newsletter!
This edition celebrates the one year anniversary of this, my second, term as Redemption Fleet Commanding Officer. For the sake of simplicity, I will omit mention of what term this is and just focus on the one year that has elapsed since this term began as "my time as the RFCO." I wrote celebration, but this is really a review of the job I have done as RFCO. I thought the best way to get a grasp on these things would be to introduce the newsletter with some simple numbers.
By the Numbers:
13 - Number of regular NL's released since I became RFCO
2 - Number of divisions in the RF one year ago
8 - Number of divisions in the RF now
2 - Number of new divisions that didn't make it
6 - Number of new divisions that did make it
0 - People who had RF merits one year ago
16 - People who have RF merits now
~38- Members of the RF one year ago
113- Members of the RF now
While the numbers don't quite "say it all," I think they do show that the RF has been steadily improving and increasing in size while I've been here.
Major Accomplishments:
What do I think have been the RF's most important accomplishments over the past year? Heading off the list, I have to say that I'm quite proud of the number of new divisions that have been added to the fleet. I'm not proud because more divisions equals more membership numbers, necessarily. Membership totals are nice, but I think the true value of additional divisions is diversity. I'm pleased to see the RF growing in diversity, offering almost limitless types of activities in various fields. I think that's what we're all here for.
Another important accomplishment has been the establishment of a fleet-wide merit system. Now, while not all divisions participate in this system, I think it is important that it offers an extra type of incentive and reward for the divisions that do use it. The RF's merit system is fun and somewhat unique, and I think it compliments the nature of Redemption Fleet quite well.
The last thing in the RF that I am proud to see as a result of the last year is a growing sense of collectivity, a sense of belonging. The RF has traditionally had difficulty with this, since it is usually a secondary fleet for most members. But during the past year, the RF has gained a fairly cohesive command staff, which seems comfortable working together. The activity on the RF message board is also an important step in this direction, and it pleases me to no end. The RF is becoming, as our index page insists, "Home Sweet Home."
Missed Opportunities:
Where do I think I've missed chances to make more accomplishments as CO in the past year? I'm not perfect, and I'm not going to try to pretend to be perfect in this report. I'm only human, and I can represent to you what I see as my failings as well as what I see as my achievements.
One thing that I feel remorse about failing at is the RF history page. Most people might not be terribly interested in it, but as a veteran member of the Rebel Squadrons, as well as the Fleet CO, I feel responsible for keeping it as up-to-date as possible. Right now, the history page only lists RF history up to about 2001. If I'm here long enough to write this report again, I hope to tell you that the RF history page is up-to-date by then.
Another missed opportunity, I think, is with the web page as a whole. Yes, I've been updating it frequently, and the graphics have been swapped out a time or two, but we're still using the same design as we were using last year at this time. I like the design, but I feel that web pages need to remain fresh in order to be most helpful. So I feel that I missed an opportunity in not getting in a new web page, and I hope to address this in the next year or so as well.
Conclusion and the Future:
It's been a year. In an online club, a year is an eternity. But here Redemption Fleet is, one year older, and even stronger and better than before. Can the growth be maintained through another year? I hope so. This fleet will always be my RS home, and I will always be happy to serve it whatever way possible.
